Belgrade's river position has defined its strategic fate for two millennia, but the visual drama of that geography reveals itself fully only from the water. The Sava flows in from the west, the Danube from the east, and their confluence — visible as a seam of differing green-gray tones — sits directly below Kalemegdan Fortress, whose limestone bastions rise seventy meters above the meeting point. The fortress itself has been rebuilt by Celts, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Austrians, each leaving a layer of masonry that catches the evening light in striations of ochre, gray, and rust.
